Title: Prioritizing people – Putting the ‘human’ back at the centre of your organization

A human centred approach underpins a truly successful organization. Failing to take account of people and their physical and mental health and wellbeing undermines the culture of the organization; increasing risk; decreasing resilience and may even lead to legal challenges.

For long term success an organization needs to address the root causes of psychological ill health and recognize that people’s work and home life are not inseparable. Organizations need to recognise that psychological health and well-being is a multi-facetted issue, that needs a holistic and joined up approach, bringing together multi-discipline teams including HR, H&S and occupational health.

This session will introduce the new international standard, DIS/ISO 45003 Psychological health and safety at work : managing psychosocial risks and provide an overview of the key recommendations for managing psychological health in the workplace that this guideline standard provides. The session will then go to explore what a truly holistic and integrated workplace wellbeing programme looks like.

Title: How to manage high risks?

SIF’s are what we definitely do not want. L’Oreal implements programs to deal with that risks

Risk assessment is always done because it is mandatory in most countries. But it is also a wonderful and efficient tool to manage risk and not only assess them. 

Risk assessment is done locally and Risk management is done globally and updated by sites management team. To focus on big risks that could have Serious Injury or Falaties (SIF’s) makes industries proud to really care people safety. L’Oreal defined 10 categories of big risks with around 180 situations/conditions that each site must comply with. On top of that, L’Oreal is very attentive to any audits, controls, insurance visits to have a big overview on high Risk Management. Each site knows exactly what is the immediate actions it needs to implement and all these actions are managed at the top levels of the company.

Title: Safety Differently

Enhancing the capacities in your people and processes that make things go right

Safety Differently is the name given to a movement that challenges leaders to view three key areas of their business differently – how safety is defined, the role of people, and the focus of the business. The term ‘Safety Differently’ was first coined in 2012 by Griffith University professor and best-selling author Sidney Dekker. Since then, the movement has continued to gain traction globally and is backed by its own research lab, along with multiple books, and several documentaries.

Safety Differently flips traditional thinking on its head and encourages organisations to grow safety from the bottom, up – rather than impose it from the top, down. Instead of spending a lot of time on the bureaucratic work of safety, organizations are invited to reconsider the actual safety of frontline work.

– People are not the problem to control, they are the solution. Learn how your workers create success on a daily basis, and harness their skills and competencies to build a safer workplace.

– Rather than intervening in worker behaviour, intervene in the conditions of their work. This involves collaborating with front-line staff and providing them with the right tools and environment to get the job done safely. The key here is intervening in workplace conditions rather than worker behaviour.

– Measure safety as the presence of positive capacities. If you want to stop things from going wrong, enhance the capacities that make things go right.

Title: Building Psychological Safety

Building Psychological Safety. As safety professionals we are used to dealing with physical and process-related hazards. We do not create safety directly, rather we put barriers and defences in place to prevent harm and mitigate failures when they do happen. Psychological safety is not that simple because we have to break personal barriers down and create vulnerability, often by talking about the mistakes we’ve made which is sometimes considered counter-intuitive in the safety business. Learn how you can create, maintain and assess psychological safety in your organisation to mind the gap between ‘work as imagined’ and ‘work as done’ more effectively.

Title: Defenseless Moments: A Different Perspective On Serious Injuries And Fatalities

Recordable injuries have come down over the last 10 years but serious injuries and fatalities have not–why? One potential explanation is that the standard model or matrix for risk assessment (probability of severity vs. probability of occurrence) didn’t include human factors: The component or piece of metal doesn’t care if it fails or breaks, but we do. In this session participants will learn what really causes the majority of serious injuries and fatalities. It is not intuitive.  More importantly, they will also learn four critical error reduction techniques that have been proven to significantly reduce serious injuries with over 4,000,000 employees in 66 countries, 24/7.

There are many Key Performance Indicators from Top-Line Revenue to the number of Recordable Injuries or the number of Serious Injuries and Fatalities. There are also Leading Indicators that Senior managers pay attention to. But which ones actually become “action items’ or which ones are the most important? Or, does it always depend on the situation? In the previous expert panels, we explored the most reliable “Leading Indicators”. In this session, we are going to take it one step further and explore the best Key Performance Indicators, in terms of what has worked the best for our Expert Panelists. So what the participants will hear is not theory, but rather what has actually worked or hasn’t worked for the panellists during their careers. There will also be some time at the end for questions from the audience, so you can ask very specific questions to any or all of the expert panellists, and most likely, get a very practical or useful answer.

One Percent Safer started as a book curated during lockdown by IOSH President Dr Andrew Sharman, with chapters contributed by leading OSH practitioners, academics and management specialists, including Erik Hollnagel and Edgar Schein. Now it has developed into something much bigger: a movement to try to make a one percent dent in the annual work-related fatalities by inspiring safety and health professionals to make changes in their organisations that contribute to that goal. This session will explain the aims of the movement and the foundation behind it, some of the themes emerging from the book and how practitioners can get involved.
